People have commented on my speaking voice for almost as long as I can remember. I recall that once, whilst I was working the bar at a music festival, a lady said to me that my “voice could soothe riots”. I haven’t yet had a chance to test this assertion, though I was, naturally, enormously flattered. The fact is, a good voice alone does not a voice artist make. What separates a professional from the myriad sonorous civilians out there is a flair for performance: knowing how to bring a script to life, the ability to inhabit characters, the confidence to take chances and deliver options. Couple this with the deep knowledge and practical understanding of recording techniques and acoustics I’ve acquired over years studying and working in recording studios and you’ve got a voice artist.
One of the jobs I took to put myself through my music degree was working in a recording studio in my hometown. As is often the case for junior staff in such places, I was a bit of a general dogsbody – I helped rehearsing bands get set up, made a lot of tea, assisted with recording sessions and did my best to keep the place running smoothly. One day, a local radio station had booked a voiceover session, for which the voice artist did not show up. As my mother raised me to be polite and personable, I had made sure to greet everybody and introduce myself. Having heard me speak, one of the clients said ‘Why don’t we get him to do it? He’s got a voice on him.’ That day, aged around 22, was the first day of my professional voiceover career, and I spent the next couple of years recording radio adverts and the occasional corporate narration.
I have had deliberate fallow periods in the interim while I focused on other things, but I am delighted to have returned to the craft, bringing the experience and skills I’ve honed in my other creative pursuits to my voiceover work.
Since rejoining the industry in 2025, I have been exploring character-led work in short films. My most recent project, a character narration for emerging AI filmmaker Gossip Goblin, has over 8 million views on YouTube at the time of writing. Click play below to hear it.
I am now taking bookings for other voice projects and would love to hear from you if you’d like to work together.
All recordings are delivered clean, balanced and ready for use. Minimal EQ and compression may be applied to ensure clarity and consistency, but the character of the performance is always preserved. Raw files are available on request.
